What to Bring

 

Equipment
The following equipment checklist contains some useful suggestions as to what you should consider bringing with you on your walk. Each walker is unique in their own hiking wants and needs, so use your best discretion when deciding what to take with you. The best advice we can give is to travel light.

Issues to Consider:
Will you have somebody transporting your luggage for you?
Will you be provided with packed lunches at a B&B?
Are you camping?
Will you be traveling to a town where you can stock up on supplies?

Short Walks:
Warm, comfortable footwear
Warm clothes
Water
Snacks (maybe even a picnic )
Mobile phone
Map/ guidebook
Sun protection
Binoculars
Camera (spare batteries/ memory card)

Long Walks:
Specialised, waterproof hiking boots
Specialist walking socks (always bring a few spare pairs)
Waterproof and windproof outer clothing
Waterproof rucksack cover (or plastic bag)
Gaiters (to keep mud out of boots)
Hat, Scarf and Gloves
Fleece

Sun Protection:
Sun lotion
Cap

Planning:
Itinerary
Emergency phones numbers
Taxi phone numbers
Accommodation phone numbers

Food & Drinks:
Plenty of drinking water
High-energy snacks

Navigation:
Compass
Map; Ordnance Survey Maps No. 56 and 62
The last kilometre of the Way is on map 61 and the towns of Bunclody and Kildavin are on map 68.

Health:
First aid kit
Blister treatment
Insect repellent (especially during summer months)
Personal medication

Practicalities:
Toilet tissue
Plenty of Cash - there are only a fewbank machines along the Way and not all places take credit cards

Whistle and torch (especially if traveling alone)

Where to Buy Equipment:
As there are no specialist outdoor equipment shops along the Wicklow Way, if you are buying hiking gear in Ireland your best bet is to take a day trip to Dublin City. Listed below is a range of specialist outdoor stores in the city.
